Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Cancer in Midland Park, NJ

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Cancer in Midland Park, NJ

Integrative cancer therapy often includes the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). This treatment makes use of a powerful oxygen delivery system, targeting the oxygen concentration toward the cancerous tumors. HBOT is often combined with other treatment modalities.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment modality used as a part of integrative cancer therapy . As a part of ICT, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is often combined with:

When combined with these other integrative cancer treatments, hyperbaric oxygen therapy seeks to decrease the risk of cancer metastasis (the spread of cancer throughout the body) and weaken the tumor so that other therapies can work to eliminate it.

Cancerous cells thrive in a low oxygen environment. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is thought to provide the tumor with excess oxygen, theoretically stabilizing the tumor, pausing metastasis. If HBOT can prevent the cancer from growing stronger or medication resistant, other treatments such as low-dose chemotherapy and pH manipulation therapy  could better attack the cancer. HBOT may also be useful in healing damage or necrosis of healthy tissue caused by radiation therapy.

How Does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treat Cancer?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for cancer is delivered via a special one-person hyperbaric oxygen chamber. During a hyperbaric oxygen treatment, the patient sits or stands in the chamber. The chamber provides 100% oxygen at a minimum of 1.3 times the normal atmospheric pressure, achieving better oxygen diffusion.

It is normal to feel nervous before this treatment, but hyperbaric oxygen therapy is nearly painless. Most patients report slight discomfort, such as ear “popping” as the oxygen pressure gradually rises. This subsides quickly. A technician administering the treatment closely monitors the process to note and remedy any possible discomfort.

A typical HBOT treatment for cancer lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Throughout this time, the oxygen pressure will gradually increase until it reaches its peak, then gradually decrease until the treatment has finished.

In most cases, more than one HBOT session may be necessary. After hyperbaric oxygen therapy, it is important to discuss the next steps that your integrative cancer therapy treatment will take.
